7 Blows of the Dragon aka Water Margin (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
The Chang Cheh-directed "The Water Margin": the martial arts epic of epics. Based on the true legend of how 108 rebel heroes living in the mountain were able to repeatedly defeat invading Sung armies, the film starred just about anyone who was a name at Shaw Brothers at the time, like David Chiang, Chen Kuan-Tai, and Ti Lung. The primitive battles ultimately end in sharp, visually effective images of death and defeat. This is a must-see for any movie fan.

Clan of the White Lotus (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
A remake of/sequel to the classic "Executioners From Shaolin", this is kung fu cinema at its most absurd and most fun. Lo Lieh plays the dastardly White Eyebrow monk Pai Mei, who--besides being able to achieve weightlessness, so he simply floats away from his attacker's blows--can suck his testicles into his abdomen! Our hero, played by "baldhead" Gordon Liu, receives a sound thrashing from Pai Mei early on, but later masters the graceful embroidery technique from kung fu babe Hui Ying Hung. Needless to say, he finally gets his revenge when, after some spectacular fight scenes, he attacks Pai Mei's "vital spot". Ouch! Ninety minutes of pure bliss.

Fangs of the Tigress (Shaw Brothers) (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
Successful director Lau Kar Leung's (Liu Chia Liang) films usually had a strong traditional emphasis on martial virtue and the importance of family. This is very evident in his kung fu comedy "My Young Auntie", which stars Kara Hui Ying Hung as a young heiress to an esteemed kung fu family embroiled in internal strife. Her gutsy and dauntless performance opposite Lau's starring role as her calm to psychotic elderly nephew-by-marriage, earned Hui the Best Actress Award at the 1982 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Heroes Two (Shaw Brothers) (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
Of the dozens of great martial arts movies made by this prolific and respected director, this tale of legendary Shaolin avengers Fang Shih-Yu (Fong Sai Yuk) and Hung Hsi-Kuan is often considered one of the best of Chang Cheh. His collaboration with equally renowned kung fu choreographer Liu Chia Liang was apparent in all the performances, but especially with that of charismatic, capable, 19-year-old Alexander Fu Sheng. This powerful production is a true landmark in kung fu film history.

Invincible One (Disciples of Shaolin) (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
Fu Sheng takes the lead role as Kwan, an innocent country bumpkin who travels to town to see his trusted old friend (played by Chi-Kwan Chun). Chi is working in a textile mill and manages to arrange work for his friend. Kwan notices that the real wealth never filters down to the common worker and the affluence he longs for (superbly represented by a pair of brand new shoes) will never be his. However, when a rival mill uses violence to get their own way, Kwan uses his kung-fu skills to great effect and is soon showered with goods by the mill owner. Chi dissuades him from becoming a hired thug for his uncaring employees. In an expertly filmed flashback, we see that Chi once found himself in similar circumstances, but realised that those in charge care little for the lackeys they employ. Instead it's better to live a quiet life away from this strife and concentrate on making ends meet. As Kwan becomes more and more spoilt by the riches that are thrown at him, he loses sight of his real friends and becomes just another property owned by the mill boss. His new position, however, soon means that he is thrust into the middle of life-threatening combat and it is not long before he meets his match. Now, Chi musters recalls his past one last time, in an effort to avenge his naive friend.

The Manchus take over the local rivals and use their cruel dominance to squeeze yet more work out of the locals. After a strike by these workers results in their beating by the hired lackies, one of their friends is persuaded to intervene. This con-artist decides to impersonate legendary Shaolin monk San-Te and scare the oppressors with a series of misleading tricks designed to give the impression of kung-fu excellence. The hoax works once, but is then exposed by one of the Manchus top fighters who has been called in to handle the situation. The dye factory workers are now in a worse position than before and are left nursing their wounds after this severe humiliation. Enraged by how helpless he feels, the exposed impersonator decides to go to the Shaolin temple to try an emulate the real San-Te. Once again using his deceptive skills to get into the temple, the eager student observes the rigurous training that all of the new fighters go through. However, when he is exposed by the head monks and is therefore required to plead his case, he is put to work within the temple to make up for his deceit. The Savage Five (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
A pacifist village is beset by bandits in this martial arts thriller. "Savage Five" hands-down rivals the ornateness of "Kid With The Golden Arm" and the twist-heavy "Five Deadly Venoms". The always great David Chiang plays a lesser version of his Rover character from "Duel Of The Iron Fist", and Ti Lung, looking incredible here, is at his physical best. Accolades to Chen Kuan Tai and Wang Chung in great sympathetic roles, too. A kung fu classic where the actual martial arts display takes a back seat to the mesmerizing story.

Shaolin Master Killer (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
Chia Lang Lui's inspired direction makes SHAOLIN MASTER KILLER truly special. He imbues the film with a sense of realism not normally associated with the genre. For instance, most plots of these films are revenge motivated. The lead character usually learns Kung Fu in a very short time and then searches out the evil opponent who killed their parent/sibling/spouse/children, etc. Though San Te eventually gets his revenge, he is motivated by his desire to bring Shaolin Kung Fu to the common man. Chia Lang Lui takes his time and films the training sequences in a convincing manner. Gordon Liu is a genuinely good actor on top of being a great martial artist. His performance does not get lost in the translation. His character is overcome by despair, anger, and sadness and you can see it clearly in his eyes and facial expressions. Liu evokes laughter from the audience one minute, then uplifts them the next. Lo Lieh plays his usual evil character, this time Manchu enforcer Lo Tang. Except for the beginning of SHAOLIN MASTER KILLER, where action fans may become restless, Liu Chia Liang produces one engrossing period film that is far more than just a Kung Fu movie.

Chan and Yuen Biao play two lunch-truck restaurateurs who are trying to make a living selling egg rolls and hamburgers in the busy squares of Barcelona. Hung is a novice private investigator searching for a beautiful pickpocket named Sylvia (Lola Ferner) whose thieving teams her up with Chan and Yuen. Sylvia is kidnapped after she discovers she is actually a wealthy heiress, and that's when Chan, Yuen, and Hung join forces to free her and kick some bad guys' butts. Wheels on Meals is lighthearted fun with stunts and action scenes (including skateboarding tricks and a scene in which Chan and Yuen face off against a motorbike gang) that simply reaffirm the stars' physical and comic talents. The celebrated fight scene is a matchup between Chan and international kickboxing champion Benny "the Jet" Urquidez. The intensity of their scenes together spurred rumors of a rivalry beyond the film. Whether or not this was true, the two paired up again four years later in Dragons Forever. As for the nonsensical title, one theory claims the film's distributor (Golden Harvest) had little success with films whose titles started with "m" so they simply switched the two words around.

Wu Tang Magic Kick (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
One of the best Taiwanese independents of the late '70s, "Northern Leg", John Liu plays Mar Tien Liang, "The Magic Kick" whose villa is attacked and plundered by the evil bloodthirsty Fang Kang (Philip Ko Fei) on his wedding night. Mar kills Fang in a bloody battle, but Mar's wife Yu Lam begs her husband not to fight again. However, Fang's brother Yu Tang (also played by Philip Ko Fei) and his son Fan (Stephen Tung Wai) set out to make Mar's life hell--kidnapping his wife's brother, torturing Mar, and driving him insane and luring Yu Lam away to live with the wicked Fan. Mar is discovered begging in the streets by his old and trusted servant (Chan Chia Kai), who helps him recover his sanity and trains him for the climactic challenge of death.
