Hot Wheels Elite: 1947 Ferrari 125 S #56 Driver F. Cortese (1:18)
The 125 S was Ferrari’s first production road car. Although it was preceded by Enzo Ferrari’s 1940 815, the 125 S was the first vehicle to bear the Ferrari name. Like the 815, it was a racing sportscar for the road, but unlike its eight cylinder predecessor, the 125 S had a new V12 engine, like almost all of the Ferrari road cars that would follow it across the following decades. It debuted in 1947 at the Piacenza race circuit in northern Italy, in the hands of Franco Cortese. Although he didn’t finish that race, just two weeks later he claimed victory for Ferrari in the Grand Prix of Rome. In all, the car won six of the 14 races that it was entered for that year. Incredibly, only two roadgoing versions were built other than Cortese’s race car, one an enclosed roadster and the other a spyder. No 125s exist today, except for an exact replica that was built for Ferrari in 1987 at huge expense.
