Tea Fight (Japanese, Action)

Movies don't get much odder than this: Tea Fight. Applying ancient curses, modern duels, underground rivalries, and journeyman adventures to, yes, the art of tea, Tea Fight rolls out stylishly like a flight-of-fancy manga adaptation, except it's actually an original story from Taiwan director Wang Ye Ming. This fun and bewildering film is all the more entertaining for enlisting the A-list Pan-Asian cast of F4 heartthrob Vic Chou (Linger), popular Japanese actress Toda Erika (Death Note: The Last Name), acclaimed actor Kagawa Teruyuki (Tokyo Sonata), top Taiwan actress Janine Chang (what on earth have I done wrong?!), and Hong Kong veteran Eric Tsang to play along with serious faces. Even the scroll painting-inspired animation sequence that opens the film is first-rate, the work of noted Japanese animation house Studio 4CZZ (Tekkon Kinkreet). With Vic Chou's charismatic turn and Toda Erika's shojo heroine cuteness leading the way, Tea Fight joyfully throws convention out the window.

Three (Thai/Korean/Chinese, Horror)

Three is a horror movie compilation, spotlighting three of Asia's most prominent directors from Hong Kong, Thailand and Korea and features a cast from across the continent. Three contains three short stories: The Wheel (Thailand) Nonzee Nimibutr, one of Thailand's most successful directors with his ghost film Nang Nak and the provocative Jan Dara, directs this short story. The "Wheel" protrays the voodoo power of a cursed puppet who terrorizes everyone who encounters it. Memory (Korea) Unlike the work Korean director Kim Jee Woon's best known for, "Memory" is bereft of humor, and is all dark eerie visuals. This short is a surreal story about a woman who loses her memory in a weird town. Going Home (Hong Kong) CID Chan Wai (Leon Lai) searches for his missing son. He breaks into his neighbouring apartment and finds Yu Fai's wife immersed in a bath of blood water.

Three Extremes (Japanese/Korean/Chinese, Horror)

Three: Extremes is a compilation of three short stories by three prominent directors from three Asian countries. After the success of the initial Three project, the producers are quick to rally up another round of horror-fest by three of the most well known directors of Asian cinema - Takashi Miike, Park Chan Wook, and Fruit Chan. Instead of focusing on ghost stories, this time the theme of the projects revolve around our deadly sins - revenge, lust, envy, greed, etc. By far, the most notable piece in Three: Extremes is arguably Park Chan Wook's "Cut." If you thought Old Boy was hard to watch, you haven't seen nothing yet. Strangulation, child murder, finger lopping, neck chomping, and blended body parts are just a few of the items on Park's menu. The main dish, of course, is revenge. You will experience the same head trip as you did with Oldboy in "Cut" as it appears that Park Chan Wook is on a rampage with psychological abuse and revenge stories. Next up is Takashi Miike's "Box." While there are a few good jumps, the film moves at a snails pace and offers us tiny, tiny clues until the big blowout at the end (which most people will never expect). This is not your typical Miike flick with blood and brain particles everywhere as we see a more quieter Miike with his latest offerings. The scenes are nicely shot, but the script could be a little better. "Dumplings" is Fruit Chan's entry with Lillian Lee's short story adaptation about a woman who would do anything to reverse the aging process. It tells the story of a fading star Ching (Miriam Yeung) who turns to unconventional methods of preserving her beauty after her husband goes for younger women. In her quest, Qing meets a gynaecologist-turned-chef Mei (Bai Ling), who offers her dumplings made from chopped-up aborted babies. As you cringe at the slo-mo scenes of Chinging munching on the crunchy dumplings, bear in mind that this story is based on true happenings in Hong Kong and China. Bai Ling does an excellent job here as the quack/chef. Director Fruit Chan's simplistic style ensures that Dumplings doesn't go overboard in trying to shock the audience.th of blood water.

After Tomi falls ill, she and Shukichi return home, while the children, grief-stricken, hasten to be with her. Starring Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara, the film reprises one of the director's favorite themes - that of generational conflict - in a way that is quintessentially Japanese and yet so universal in its appeal that it continues to resonate as one of cinema's greatest masterpieces.

Tokyo Zombie (Japanese, Horror/Comedy)

Tokyo Zombie is simply a wild widescreen funhouse ride of slapstick humor, genre parody, gore gags, and general horror-comedy anarchy. It’s pretty irresistible. Japanese genre film favorites Tadanobu Asano (Survive Style 5+) and Sho Aikawa (the Dead or Alive trilogy) Eboth saddled with haircuts that will provoke giggling anyway Estar as two blue-collar laborers with dreams of being jujitsu champions, a shared goal sidelined by the sudden invasion of a zombie army storming Tokyo, descending from “Mt. Dark Fuji.EThe duo are separated by fate (but can one become a zombie if you’re bitten by someone with false teeth?), but reunited years later Ejust when you think the film can’t get any more outrageous, Sato throws you a Kill Bill-styled anime exposition transition, and then a parody of Romero’s Land of the Dead, with wealthy survivors enjoying the spectacle of zombie wrestling. A laugh-out-loud blast from start to finish.

Sin (Jang Dong-Gun) is from North Korea and still feels the effects of his parents' slaying at the hands of brutal South Korean tormentors, who refused to allow Sin's family to move into the country when he was a kid. Sin plans to destroy both North and South Korea in the ultimate act of vengeance, and his acquisition of some potentially deadly nuclear waste helps further his maniacal dreams. Jang Se-jong (Jung-Jae Lee) is a South Korean native whose naval training is called upon when he is given the task of tackling Sin, and director Kwak draws on a strong supporting cast to act out some explosive and bloody battles as the two men go head-to-head. Kwak takes the eyebrow-raising decision to have his cast speak in English for most of the film, and some of the lines could possibly have benefited from a little more work in the preproduction stage. But TYPHOON isn't meant to be Shakespeare, and audiences will surely revel in the on-screen pyrotechnics and death-defying stunt work that barely lets up from start to finish.
