Battle Field Baseball (Japanese, Action)
Yudai Yamaguchi, from the writer of Versus, in his debut film, gives us a world first - a baseball zombie horror comedy, complete with chainsaws, corpses sailing through the air and high-kicking kung-fu antics. Based on a popular manga story by Gataro Man that ran in the top-selling Monthly Shonen Jump magazine, Battlefield Baseball almost dispenses with the bat and ball altogether, and instead deals up a whole lot more fun in its place, mocking the cliches of the genre in a manner as spirited as it is funny.

Black Society Trilogy - 3 DVD Set (Japanese, Action)
Shinkuku Triad Society: The first film portrays a world of alienation that finds its expression in rape and murder. In this twilight world, where gangster and law enforcer attract and repel each other in waves of violence, Tatsuhito, a dirty cop pursues the gay Chinese warlord, Wang, through the night world of Shinjuku and over to Taiwan. Shinjuku Triad Society is a shocking investigation of a dehumanized society, in which Tatsuhito fights to obtain a glimpse of salvation.
Rainy Dog: The second film continues the theme of alienation, as an outcast yakuza Yuji, lives as a hit man on the fringes of the Taiwanese criminal world. When Yuji is unexpectedly saddled with what may be his real son, a sense of responsibility is born in him as he uses his lethal skills to find some sort of haven for his newly found family. In this lean and mean movie, full of twists, shocks and violent death, Miike finds a glimmer of hope in the need for all of us to care for something.
Ley Lines: The final film finds the darkness of racial bigotry in the heart of Japanese society and bureaucracy. Three boys of mixed race seek to escape from Japan, but their search brings them up against dangerous gang boss Wong, who holds the key to their departure. Once again, Miike astounds with this compelling and outrageous yet honest look at sex and violence at the fringes of society.

Bodyguard from Beijing, The (Chinese, Martial Arts Action)
Hong Kong martial arts master Jet Li plays a bodyguard from the Beijing secret police, sent to Hong Kong to protect a beautiful young witness to a mob killing, played by Christy Chung. Li turns her home into a high-security prison, complete with video cameras surveying every room, even her bedroom. Furious, Chung resists his efforts to protect her--until the threat to her life is made abundantly clear in a spectacular shopping mall shootout. As is natural under such circumstances, romance begins to bloom, much to the dismay of Chung's lawyer boyfriend, who hired Li in the first place. Made in the last few years before the British province of Hong Kong was returned to the rule of mainland China, The Bodyguard from Beijing makes many (possibly anxious) jokes about the differences between the austere Communist bodyguard and the lackadaisical H.K. police. Li's character is so consistently stone-faced that his usual boyish charm is repressed, and the movie emphasizes gunplay over acrobatic kung fu action, but there are still kicks galore and the usual Hong Kong combination of spectacular violence and outrageous sentimentality--all captured in stylish, glossy cinematography. And how often do you get to see venetian blinds used as an offensive weapon?

Brother (Japanese, Action)
It's hard to describe the hypnotic authority of director and actor Takeshi Kitano. In his first American venture, Brother, Kitano plays a yakuza who's been exiled from Japan after the death of his boss. In Los Angeles, he discovers that his half-brother has become a small-time hood. Kitano quickly takes over, casually setting in motion gang wars and killing sprees. But a basketball game gets as much emphasis as an assassination; Kitano's camera watches a dead body lit up by the flash of gunshots, completely ignoring the shootout that's causing the light. Yet his movies don't seem arty, just efficient--and effective: you may not know whether to laugh or flinch, but you will not stop watching. As an actor, Kitano slouches, twitches, and stares blankly--but you won't stop watching him either.
